Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses evidence-based techniques to teach new skills, reduce problematic behaviors, and promote positive behaviors through reinforcement and structured interventions. It is commonly used to help individuals, especially children, with developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder, but can also be beneficial for people with other developmental disabilities or behavioral challenges.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a professional who is trained and certified to practice ABA therapy. BCBA's are experts in assessing behavior, designing intervention plans, implementing strategies, and monitoring progress to help individuals achieve behavioral goals and improve their quality of life. They work closely with clients, families, and other professionals to create personalized treatment plans and support individuals in reaching their full potential.

How does ABA differ from therapy?

ABA is primarily a behavior-focused treatment that aims to improve specific behaviors and skills through systematic assessment and intervention techniques, focusing on modifying behaviors, teaching new skills, and reducing problematic behaviors through reinforcement and behavior management strategies.

Therapy, on the other hand, typically involves a broader focus on mental health and emotional well-being. Therapy, or counseling, emphasizes talking, listening, and providing support to help individuals cope with emotional issues, improve relationships, manage stress, and address personal challenges. Therapy can encompass various approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy, and more, depending on the needs of the individual seeking assistance.

Functional Behavior Assessment

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a process used to understand the underlying function or purpose of a behavior. This process involves identifying triggers, antecedents, and consequences of behaviors, analyzing patterns, and developing a behavior intervention plan tailored to address specific behavioral challenges effectively. By understanding the function behind the behavior, parents can implement targeted strategies, increasing the effectiveness of behavior management approaches and promoting positive behavior change in their child.

FBA Process:

  1. Define the target behavior.

  2. Conduct initial assessment through interviews, observation, and data collection.

  3. Determine function of the target behavior.

  4. Develop a Behavior Intervention Plan based on function of behavior.

  5. Monitor and adjust implementation of Behavior Intervention Plan.
