Apr 24, 2025
The IEP process can feel like a maze. As a school-based BCBA, you’re expected to contribute—sometimes without clear guidance, training, or authority. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Where exactly do I fit in here?”, this session is for you.
Our “IEP Protocol for BCBAs” session at the Behavior Change in Schools Conference is a roadmap for stepping confidently into your role. You’ll get access to a complete, field-tested protocol for navigating every part of the IEP process—from prep to follow-through.
In this session, we’ll cover:
-
How to prepare for IEP meetings and align your contributions with IDEA
-
Tips for writing behavior-focused IEP goals that are observable, measurable, and achievable
-
What to say (and not say) in contentious meetings
-
A printable IEP Implementation Checklist to keep everyone on track
📋 You’ll walk away with templates, scripts, and confidence.
Free Session Preview: The “3-Part Rule” for Behavior Goals
When contributing to behavior goals in an IEP, remember this simple formula to keep things clear, compliant, and measurable:
The 3-Part Rule:
Behavior + Condition + Criteria
Example:
"Student will request a break using a break card (behavior) during independent seatwork (condition) in 4 out of 5 trials over 2 consecutive weeks (criteria)."
Why it matters:
-
Behavior ensures clarity about what’s expected.
-
Condition defines when and where it should occur.
-
Criteria show how success will be measured.
Bonus Tip: Avoid vague language like “improve behavior” or “decrease disruptions.” Those are interpretations, not observable behaviors.
